Three matches of the Singer Schools ‘Under 19 Division 1’ Two Day Cricket Tournament 2019/20 got underway at Colombo and Negombo. The century made by Leshan Amarasinghe of Isipathana College and 4-wicket haul taken by Ruvin Senevirathne of St. Peter’s College were the highlights of the day.

St. Joseph’s College, Colombo vs St. Anthony’s College, Kandy 

The traditional encounter between St. Joseph’s College and St. Anthony’s College commenced today at St. Joseph’s College Grounds in Colombo. After being asked to bat first, the hosts made 209 runs in 61.1 overs. Miranga Wickramage was the top scorer for the hosts as he made 58 runs off 97 balls. 

In addition to this,  Dinal Anuradha (29) and Sheran Fonseka (25) chipped in with valuable contributions with the bat. Sasith Hirudika was the pick of the bowlers for the Antonians as he picked up 3 wickets for 66 runs. In reply, the visitors were in a spot of bother as they lost 3 wickets for 53 runs at the close of play on day one. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.

Royal College, Colombo vs St. Peter’s College, Colombo 

The traditional encounter between Royal College and St. Peter’s College commenced today at SSC Grounds in Colombo. After winning the toss, the St. Peter’s College skipper chose to bowl first and a disciplined bowling effort helped them to restrict Royal College to 132 runs in 44.2 overs. 

The off-spinner Ruvin Senevirathne (4/36) and left-arm spinner Kanishka Maduwantha (3/58) ripped through the batting line-up of Royal College, sharing 7 scalps between them. In reply, the St. Peter’s College batsmen posted 105 runs for 5 wickets at the close of play on day one. 

Shannon Fernando stroked a classy half ton for the Peterites. Gishan Balasooriya and Kavindu Pathirathna took 2 wickets each for Royal College. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.

Maris Stella College, Negombo vs Isipathana College, Colombo 

The Group A encounter between Isipathana College and Maris Stella College commenced today at Kadirana Cricket Grounds in Negombo. After winning the toss, the Isipathana College skipper opted to bat first and posted 272 runs for 9 wickets, before declaring the innings.

Leshan Amarasinghe stroked a brilliant century (106), while Yasiru Kasthuriarachchi (67) contributed with a half ton for Isipathana College. Ashen Fernando (3/59) and Thilina Perera (3/75) starred with the ball, taking 3 wickets each for Maris Stella. 

In reply, the Maris Stella College batsmen struggled with the bat as they lost 7 wickets for just 47 runs when the umpires called stumps on day one. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.
