Woshitha Amarasinghe’s resistance holds St. Aloysius to draw

A brave second innings effort by S. Thomas’ College, Matara led by Woshitha Amarasinghe helped them hold St. Aloysius College, Galle to a draw, after being shot out for just 76 on the opening day.

St. Aloysius too found batting difficult but managed to get 146 securing a vital 70 run first innings lead. Omal Sadith’s entertaining 48 was the highlight of their batting effort while Niduka Malith followed up his two wickets with a vital unbeaten 25*. 

Sachira Theekshana was the pick of the bowlers for S. Thomas’ College as he captured 4/44, while Hirusha Jeewadith chipped in with 3 wickets. 

Batting a second time around with a deficit of 70 runs, the Thomians killed a lot of time in the game as they batted for 77.2 overs while making 192 runs all out when the game ended on day two. It was Amarasinghe’s brave efforts that helped them salvage a draw, as he completed a marathon innings of 75 runs which lasted for over 3 hours. 

Nimanthaka Bashana gave him good company with his 31 runs, while Jeewadith showed his all-round abilities with a vital 21 runs which consumed a lot of time out of the game.

The St. Aloysius bowlers toiled hard with not a lot of success, but Harshani Nadeesha, Bashana de Silva and Sandun Madushanka ended with two wickets apiece as they secured a first innings win.
