Four games of Singer U19 Division Cricket Tournament 2019/20 concluded today, 17th January.

Thurstan College, Colombo vs Lumbini College, Colombo

Winning the toss and batting first, Lumbini College were bowled out cheaply for 164 runs on day 01.

Thurstan College managed only 130 runs in reply. The game seemed to be going in the Thurstanites favour, but Lumbini came back strong in the second innings to shake Thurstan up. Gimhana Theekshana (58) and Ravindu Rathnayake (54) took the responsibility of steadying the ship for Lumbini. Lumbini posted 248 runs for their second innings.

A challenging target of 183 runs was set for the Thurstanites. Chasing 183 in the fourth innings at Thurstan grounds was quite a challenging task, but Thurstan skipper led from the front with an effortless 84 runs, making the chase look absolutely effortless. Vihanga Jayanama, who assisted the skipper in the kill, scored 49 runs. Thurstan went past the line comfortably with 7 wickets intact.

Mahanama undid the Antonians early on day-one, giving away only 116 runs to their team.

Mahanama College racked up 274 runs to secure first innings points and posing a threat of an outright defeat for the boys from Wattala. 

It was just then that Vishal Silva decided to enter the scene. The left-hander brought up his 3rd ton of the season to save his school from humiliation. Vishal also became the only batsman to have scored 3 centuries this season so far. His 141 runs propelled St. Anthony’s College to 216 runs for their second-innings.

Tissa Central College, Kalutara vs Gurukula College, Kelaniya

The traditional encounter was worked off in Kalutara, where the visitors won the toss and batted first. Gurukula posted 199 runs for the first-innings. Janitha Shehan topped the batting with 36 runs while Rohan Sanjaya was the star with the ball. The Sri Lanka youth player picked up 6 wickets for 80 runs.

The home team replied meekly with 139 runs. It was Rohan who once more played the role of a lone warrior, scoring 65 runs. Likshan Sasanga, Rashmika Mevan and Rishitha Sankalpa all bagged 3 wickets each.

Coming out in the second innings, the boys from Kelaniya scored 219 runs. Niluka Heshan scored a useful 40 runs while Rohan Sanjaya wrapped a match-bag of 11 wickets with a fifer in the second-innings. 

Gurukula College bowled out the Tissa Central boys for 100 runs to seal a 179-run victory with ease.

St. Servatius’ College, Matara vs Richmond College, Galle

St. Servatius’ College were cruising the game with authority as they came in to day 02 with 255 runs on board. They beefed up the total to a 283 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Chethaka Denuwan was the man in the spotlight after scoring a century on day 01. Kavindu Nirmana recorded a fifer to top the bowling card for Richmond College. 

The skipper of the Matara school put the Richmondites under tremendous pressure with his right-arm off spin. He had 6 wickets under his belt by the end of his innings as Richmond College was dismantled for just 81 runs. It took quite a while for St. Servatius’ College to bundle out the boys from Galle, which cost them an outright win in the game.
