St. Thomas’ Matara earn first-innings points in low-scoring encounter

The battle between St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala and St. Thomas’ College, Matara, came to a close with the Thomians earning first-innings honours. Two other games of the Singer U19 Division I Cricket Tournament 2018/19 got underway today, 17th December. Sylvester’s College, Kandy hosted Mahinda College, Galle while Kingswood College, Kandy faced off against St. Anthony’s College, Wattala.

St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala vs St. Thomas’ College, Matara

St. Anne’s College, who were put in to bat first by St. Thomas’ College, Matara, managed only 90 runs in their first-innings. Sineth Sithara and Sachira Rashmika picked up 3 wickets each for St. Thomas’.

It wasn’t much of a show from St. Thomas’ either as they barely managed to go past St. Anne’s College as their innings was wrapped up for 93 runs. Mihisal Amoda’s 28 runs was the only notable performance with the bat while Mayas Musammil and Pasindu Thennakoon shared 6 wickets between them.

St. Anne’s College was somewhat better in the second-innings as they scored 141 runs for the loss of 8 wickets and declared their innings. Yasith Warnakulasooriya and Muiz Rafeel both managed 30-plus scores for St. Anne’s.

The match came to a close as St. Thomas’ College batted out the rest of the game and ended at 95 for 5 in their second innings, earning first-innings points.

St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy vs Mahinda College, Galle

Sylvester’s College have clearly taken the upper-hand in the game by the end of day-one. The Vesters who were put in to bat first, heaped 293-runs in their first-innings. Kevin Nimshan who was on full throttle, amassed 140 runs to his name. It only took two other good knocks, which was duly provided by Nadeera Balasooriya (58) and Charith Rajaguru (45), to take St. Sylvester’s to the top. Subanu Rajapakshe and Kaveesha Malliyawadu were men on the money with the ball as they picked 3 wickets each.

Mahinda College, Galle were on 59 for 2 by the end of day one. Lahiru Bashana was among the ones departed with 29 runs to his name.

Kingswood College, Kandy vs St. Anthony’s College, Wattala

Batting first, Kingswood College scored 124 runs in their first-innings. Asitha Gamage top-scored with 29 runs for Kingswood while Pathum Vihanga and Hashen Malik both chipped in with 3 wickets each.

It did not take too long for Kingswood to come out and bat their second-innings as they bowled out the Antonians for 81 runs in 35.3 overs. Deegayu Bandara, Harshana Wickramasinghe and Lakmal de Silva all picked up 2 wickets each.

Kingswood College were at 17 for 2 at the close of play. The game will resume tomorrow for day-two.
