Classy Dineth Jayakody puts Joes on top

Right handed stroke maker Dineth Jayakody made a classy ton as St. Joseph’s College took the upper hand on day one against St. Sebastian’s College in the second semi final of the Singer Schools ‘Under 19 Division 1’ Two Day Cricket Tournament 2018/19.

Ashain Daniel, the skipper of St. Joseph’s College won the all important toss and had no hesitation to bat first on a batting friendly surface at Royal College grounds in Colombo. The opening pair Johanne de Zilva and Sheran Foneska got Joes to a flying start as they built a 74-run partnership for the first wicket.

However, both the openers were back in the hut when the score was at 76 with Johanne de Zilva making 59 runs off 60 balls. Dineth Jayakody, arguably the best batsman in the Joes lineup and Sri Lanka U19 cap, Dunith Wellalage built a match winning partnership of 113 runs for the 5th wicket.

Jayakody made a classy knock of 116 runs off 131 balls with 13 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 89. Wellalage stroked 62 runs off 114 balls including 6 fours. A late strike from Lakshan Gamage put St. Joseph’s College in a commanding position as they finished day one on 415 runs for 8 wickets.

Gamage stoked 79 runs off 96 balls including 10 fours and a six. Off spinner Praveen Cooray bowled 13 overs with 2 maidens and gave away 42 runs for 2 wickets. The skipper Nuwanindu Fernando and Vinuja Ranasinghe also picked up 2 wickets each for the lads from Moratuwa.
