Trinity records outright victory, Thurstan claims first innings points

Two matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted yesterday around the island.

Trinity College vs Bandaranayake College, Gampaha

Trinity College managed to record an outright victory against Bandaranayake College in the Group A clash which was worked off today at the historic Asgiiriya Stadium. Bandaranayake College resumed day two on 131 runs for 8 wickets and lost the remaining two wickets for just 17 runs in the morning session. Vimukthi Nethumal and Kavishka Senadheera were brilliant with the ball for the Trinity lions as they picked up 9 wickets between them. Trinity College began their second innings 30 runs ahead and declared the innings at 177 runs for 5 wickets while setting a target of 208 runs to chase for the lads from Gampaha. Hasintha Jayasuriya scored a well-made half-ton while Trewon Weerasooriya chipped in with 39 valuable runs. Shahiru Roshen picked up 3 wickets for Bandaranayake College taking his match tally into 7 wickets. Chasing 208 runs to win, Bandaranayake batsmen struggled to cope with the disciplined bowling efforts of Trinity as they were bowled out for just 115 runs. Vimukthi Nethumal and Kavishka Senadheera starred again in the second innings as they picked up 4 wickets and 3 wickets respectively.

D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo vs Thurstan College, Colombo

Group A encounter between D.S. Senanayake College and Thurstan College concluded today at Thurstan ground in a draw but the first innings points were won by Thurstan College. Home side resumed day two on 132 runs for 3 wickets and managed to post 231 runs all out for their first innings. Nimesh Perera was the star with the bat as he scored 74 runs while Sawan Prabhash contributed a valuable half century for Thurstan College. Visitors began their second innings 68 runs behind and batted positively as they declared the innings at 213 for 7 which came at a run rate of 4.17. Muditha Lakshan who starred with the ball in the first innings showed his all-round skills as he scored 84 runs for D.S. Senanayake College. Thurstan batsmen were set a target of 146 which they could not chase down as umpires called stumps on day two.
