TPT 2016: Trinity and S. Thomas’ share U-19 title

The 2nd Trinity-Peterite-Thomian Hockey Carnival (TPT) 2016 took place from 9.00 am onwards at the St. Peter’s College Bambalapitiya Grounds.

This carnival, established in 2015, serves as a frontier to maintain and further develop the standards of hockey in the respective schools of Trinity College Kandy, St. Peter’s College Bambalapitiya and S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia, providing the chance for players from various generations hailing from all three schools to relive their passion for the sport along with their families. S. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya hosted the tournament this year.

The carnival was carried out as a hockey sevens tournament under five different age groups. The age groups were U-15, U-19, 20-30, 30-40 and 40+ respectively. The U-15 segment is the latest inclusion into the carnival.

The Chief Guests gracing the occasion were Mr. Andrew Fouler Watt (Principal, Trinity College), Mr. Romesh de Mel (President-OBA, St. Peter’s College) and Mr. Asanka Perera (Sub Warden, S. Thomas’ College)

The teams battled it out for the respective trophies in their age groups. The results of the fixtures were as follows;

The highlight of the day was the much anticipated U-19 Final, with defending champions S. Thomas’ College, taking on Trinity College. Both teams went all guns blazing from the sounding of the opening whistle and provided no quarter against their opponents.

The crowd witnessed a spectacular final, as the defense of both teams held fort. Due to this, the score read, 0-0 at full time. This led to a nail biter extra time period, and eventually a single series 8-second shootout to determine outcome of the match.

The shootout led by the two skippers, Javindu Peiris for S. Thomas’ and Kasun Jayasinghe for Trinity, ended 4-4 when the officials declared the teams as Joint Champions due to poor light conditions as a result of the failing light of the day.

Throughout the proceedings, the old boys and present boys of the three schools shared a sense of camaraderie and friendly rivalry through their love for the sport.

The organizing committee of the tournament led by the old boys should be commended for the efforts taken to promote the sport amongst the emerging generations of the schools.

Next year’s edition of the Trinity-Peterite-Thomian Hockey Carnival (TPT) will take place at Trinity College, Kandy.
