Thurstan takes first innings lead over Sebastians on day one

Six matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted today around the island.

S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia vs Mahinda College, Galle

Group D fixture between S. Thomas’ College and Mahinda College commenced today at S. Thomas’ College grounds. After winning the toss, Thomian skipper decided to bat without any hesitation and posted a solid 278 runs for 9 wickets for their first innings.

Krishan Munasinghe was fantastic with the bat as he scored 110 runs for the hosts. In reply, Mahinda College was 18 for 1 at stumps on day one. Match will continue tomorrow for day two.

St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa vs Thurstan College, Colombo

Two strong outfits in School under 19 cricket, St. Sebastian’s College and Thurstan College met each other today in a Group A fixture at Thurstan College grounds. Host skipper won the toss and invited the opposition to take the first lease of the wicket. Visitors struggled to put a solid score on the board for their first innings as they were bowled out for 141 runs.

Sandaru Dias was the pick of the bowlers for Thurstan College with 5 wickets while Ayesh Harshana picked up 3 wickets. In reply, the hosts managed to get a first innings lead over the lads from Moratuwa as they finished day one on 156 runs for 5 wickets.

Wesley College, Colombo vs Nalanda College, Colombo

Group C fixture between Wesley College and Nalanda College commenced today at Nalanda College grounds. Nalanda skipper won the toss and elected to bowl first on their home soil and managed to bowl out the opposition for a modest total of 173 runs.

Right handed stroke maker Thisuraka Akmeemana batted well for his classy knock of 84 runs while right arm fast medium bowler Suhanga Wijewardene starred with the ball for Nalanda as he picked up 5 wickets for 18 runs. In reply, Nalanda College was 79 runs for 3 wickets at stumps on day one.

President’s College, Kotte got major honours in the Group C fixture against St. Anthony’s College, which began at St. Anthony’s College grounds. Visiting team’s skipper won the toss and decided to take the first lease of the wicket. The decision to bat first paid off as they posted 343 runs for their first innings.

Ganidu Dewmina top scored for the lads from Kotte with 94 runs while Hasindu Pramuka chipped in with a valuable 74 runs. At stumps on day one, the hosts were 56 runs for 2 wickets. Match will continue tomorrow for day two.

Group A fixture between D.S. Senanayake College and Dharmasoka College commenced today at Bandaragama Public grounds. After winning the toss, DS skipper decided to bat first and managed only 210 runs for their first innings. Vinuka Dilshan and Imesh Mendis picked up 7 wickets between them for lads from down south.

In reply, Dharmasoka batsmen showed very poor effort with the bat as they were bundled out for just 92 runs. After being asked to follow on, Dharmasoka College was 7 for none for their second innings at stumps on day one.

St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa vs Gurukula College, Kelaniya

Gurukula College, Kelaniya managed to dominate the Group C clash against St.  Joseph Vaz College which commenced today at Prison Grounds, Mahara. After winning the toss, Gurukula skipper invited the opposition to bat first. St. Joseph Vaz batsmen were struggling against the Gurukula bowlers from the first ball and only scored 42 runs for their first innings.

Lakshan Rasanga and Manidu Viduranga picked up 4 wickets each for the lads from Kelaniya. In reply, Gurukula posted 145 runs for their first innings. At stumps on day one, St. Joseph Vaz College was struggling again in their second innings with 37 runs for 4 wickets.
