Thomians prevail in low scoring encounter

Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia beat St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya by 90 runs in the Singer Schools Under 17 limited overs tournament at Mount Lavinia and advanced to the quarter finals.

In what was expected to be a closely contested round of 16 game, the Peterites won the toss and decided to send the Thomians in to bat first. The Peterites drew first blood when Mohamed Ishaq edged Trishen Wickramasinghe in the 4th over for a duck with the score at 13 runs. Thereon in, the Thomians lost wickets at regular intervals. They ended their innings on 204/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Yohan Wijeweera was the pick of the bowlers for the Peterites with figures of 3/45. Kishan Munasinghe top scored for the Thomians with 49 runs.

As the openers of the Peterite camp walked out, there was a sense of confidence in the air as they were set a chaseable target. However the Thomians begged to differ as Thevin Eriyagama hit Yohan Wijeweera on the pads to dismiss the Peterite opener in the 2nd over with the score on 1. As overs passed on the target was getting impossible to reach and wickets started to tumble  Eventually the Peterites lost their last wicket with the score on 114 in 39.3 overs. Opener Jude de Silva top scored for the Peterites with 29 runs, while Kishan Munasinghe ended with figures of 3/16.
