Despite Nethmi Waduge’s dominance in the second set, the resilient Thisuri Molligoda fought back to win her second consecutive Women’s Singles National title at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association playing courts today (20th).

The final game that started this morning at 9.30 a.m. saw the defending champion Thisuri taking honours in the first set winning it 7-5. It was an easy pick for her but it was her counterpart Nethmi Waduge who laid her intentions clear in the next set.

Fighting her way in the second set was the 18-year-old Nethmi Waduge who went on to gain a 2 game advantage but Molligoda took her own time and replied strongly. With Nethmi reaching the six-game target and having a single game in between her and the national title, the equalizer came from Molligoda as they went in for the tiebreaker.

It was an easy stint for Molligoda in the tie-breaker where she cruised to the victory winning the tie with an advantage of three points. The final scores read 7-5, 7-6(3) in favor of Thisuri Molligoda.

With this win, Thisuri goes on the leaderboard for her second Women’s open title win and has successfully retained her crown. Speaking to ThePapare, she added these words on her win,

“I never thought I could ever win the national singles title twice and after a season that had lot of upsets which stopped me from playing, I was able to win this again and I am very happy about it”

The other anticipated final, the Men’ Open Singles is set to take place on Sunday the 21st of August 2016 at the SLTA courts. Playing the final will be Yasitha de Silva and Sharmal Dissanayake.
