The Division 2 Group B’s battle at the Carlton Cup 2013

143

The Division 2 group B was dominated by the Anandians. The first match they played itself proved how strong they were:  a victory by 25 points against Green’s B (61 -36).

Though they were not able to reach this high in performance thereafter in the tournament, the Anandians had 4 victories and one loss towards the end of the group B games. They also affected  victories against  the Negombo Knights, BBOD and the Stallions. Don Bosco was the only loss for the Anadians by 3 points: 51 -54.

Yes, Don Bosco was equally strong in performance as Anadians, but Anadians had a greater opportunity since they gained high bonus points early on. The Don’s spell was every intense. Apart from the Ananda- Bosco match the rest had huge point margins before the victories and the loss. Negombo Knights were the only team to beat the Dons, but it was a massive loss: 17 point gap with Negombo Knights at 54 while Dons way below with a 37. On the other hand the victories – a win by 33 points against Green’s B and another by 34 points against BBOD – were remarkable to watch. The final match against the stallions was a pretty tight one. With both teams winning equal numbers of quarters;  the Don’s just managed to win the match by 3 points. However, the 17 point loss caused a lot of damage to the Don’s bonus point scheme.

Negombo Knights were the third best performers, although marginal in difference to the Dons. In numbers they had 4 wins and 1 loss as well. Obviously the 17 point win against Dons’ was the highlight among the victories. BBOD and the Stallions were beaten by the Knights with ease with 30 and 15 point gaps in final scores. Surprisingly, the Green’s B and Negombo folks had a very tough time.  The match was pretty tight unlike in the previous cases and the Knights just escaped the losing by 1 point.

In the case of the Greens,  they were struggling behind these teams with 4 losses; and they were massive losses. The only victory was the match against BBODs. This was not an iconic performance either. It was rather another effort just  to get through winning the match by 6 points.

Not surprisingly, the Stallions and BBOD were the last in the Group B. The tallions managed to win over the Green’s B team but it was not good enough to make up for their losses. Turning on to BBODs they had a very unfortunate time with five losses and no wins. This just provided additional bonus points to the opponents. But after all, the weak performances always help maintain equilibrium of a Basketball tournament.
