A last minute header by New Youngs SC winger Mohamed Mushikan inflicted a 3-2 defeat on Super Sun SC, crushing the Super 8 hopes of the Beruwala faithful, as a thrilling game at the Vernon Fernando Stadium ended in heartbreak for the home fans.

Super Sun who sprung a surprise to register their first win of the season against Air Force midweek were yet to appoint a coach going into a must-win game for them and were without Bonsu Kwabena and Shafraz Kais due to suspensions. New Youngs, on the other hand had problems of their own with their team plagued with injuries and suspensions as well.

Super Sun dominated the early proceedings with Nuwan Priyankara and Shifakath Rahuman shining down the right flank for the Beruwala based team.

They failed to create any clear cut chances though and Rahuman had the best chance of the half for them, when the goalkeeper Krishan Fernando, spilled the ball from a corner but the youngster could only put the ball wide of the far post from a tight angle.

New Youngs then took the lead, very much against the run of play, as a good corner from Mohamed Nifraz was deflected into the Super Sun goal by their own defender Dinesh Abeyratne in the 37th minute.

New Youngs held on to their unlikely lead till the half time whistle to go into the break with some momentum.

Half Time – Super Sun SC 0-1 New Youngs SC

Super Sun wasted no time getting back into the game in the second half as some poor defending at the edge of the box from visitors was punished by Duodu Joseph who hit a left footed drive past second choice keeper Krishan Fernando just 2 minutes after the restart.

New Youngs should have put themselves 2-1 up a short while afterwards but Ankamah George missed a couple of golden opportunities within a minute after some brilliant initial work by Mohamed Mushikan.

They eventually did make it 2-1 a short while later as a low corner was flicked on by George at the near post for Hasitha Priyankara to tap home from point blank range.

New Youngs were then forced into a change when keeper Krishan Fernando picked up a knee injury and goal scorer Hasitha Priyankara had to replace him between the posts.

Super Sun drew level shortly afterwards through a Duodu Joseph penalty in the 77th minute after Ahamed Rishmark, who was brought on a few seconds earlier, was brought down just inside the box by a late tackle.

Super Sun had the momentum and made some attacking changes but just couln’t make it pay and failed to create any clear cut chances to trouble the stand-in keeper.

Their failure to do so was punished late on in the game, when Harsha Tissera found Mushikan inside the box with an inch perfect cross and the winger made no mistake with the header to seal New Youngs’ 4th win of the season.

ThePapare.com Player of the Match: Mohamed Mushikan (New Youngs SC)

Speaking to jubilant New Youngs coach Rohitha Fernando, he had this to say;

“We had six players out with injuries and suspensions and we would have settled for a point but really happy with all three. We had to play 3 matches this week and picked up most of our injuries midweek, and as we have some tough matches up ahead hopefully we can get a few of our injured players back on the field. We have a good squad though and I’m really pleased with the performances of our local players and youngsters who’ve been brilliant up to this point.”
