27th One Day Encounter

The 27th limited overs encounter between Moratu Maha Vidyalaya and Sri Sumangala College Panadura ended in favour of the latter today at the De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa. The Sumangalians won the match by 5 wickets.

After tussling out in their 67th Big Match at the same venue on Friday and Saturday, the two rivals turned out one more time to take home glory with a win in the 50-over encounter.

Battle of the Rocks and Battle of the Golds end in draws

The 35th Battle of the Rocks between Maliyadeva College Kurunegala.

The toss was won by Moratu Maha Vidyalaya skipper Nishan Madushka and elected to bat first on a wicket which looked to be cracked and favouring the spinners. Just like it looked, the Sri Sumangala boys took full advantage and restricted their opponents for a mere 108.

Losing their first wicket in the 6th over for 16 runs the Moralians kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The highest partnership was of just 24 runs and that was between captain Madushka and Hashen Adithya for the 2nd wicket.

Madushka being a player with loads of experience after representing Sri Lanka U19 and playing in the Super Provincial leagues conducted by the SLC, couldn’t perform as expected as he seemed to be restricted due to the burden of leadership and expectations.

His 61-ball knock which consisted of 5 elegant boundaries came to an end at 36 runs when his team was on 61 as the 4th wicket. His dismissal happened just after Chamalka Pushpakumara, the 2nd highest run scorer for Moratu Maha Vidyalaya, was dismissed.

Pushpakumara’s 10 was the only other score apart from Madushka’s 36 and wicket keeper Madushan Dilakshana’s 18 which reached double figures. After another 20-run stand for the 5th wicket Moratu Maha Vidyalaya withered off for 108 runs.

In bowling for Sri Sumangala College young Vishwa Kumara was excellent with figures of 4/19 in 10 overs. Destroying the Moratuwa middle order his left arm spin was brilliant and he showed immense potential and character.

Poorna Prabath and Anuka Jayasinghe shared 4 wickets among them. Despite a brilliant bowling performance the boys from Panadura dropped 4 catches, which at the end didn’t prove to be that costly.

The run-chase for Sri Sumangala started off really well as the opening pair of Prabash Jayasekara and Mihiranga Fernando added 44 runs for the 1st wicket in 13.4 overs. Following a solid start for the run-chase the Moratuwa spinners took 3 quick wickets to dent the Panadura boys.

Left-arm spinner Eran Hansamal was the first to strike as he dismissed Fernando for 20 and his bowling partner, off-spinner Vishwa Didulaka picked up the 2nd and the 3rd. The 4th wicket stand between skipper Janindu Inuwara and Jayasekara lasted only 14 runs as Didulaka struck back to send Jayasekara back to the hut for 27 runs.

From 59/4 the Sumangalians managed to get back to the box seat with a 36-run stand between Shenadith Fernando and skipper Inuwara. After doing the hardwork of getting back on track, Inuwara was dismissed as the last wicket for 17 runs.

Shanadith from then took charge and took his team home. He remained unbeaten on 27 while Charuka Jayathilake finished off the game for Sri Sumangala stylishly with a six over mid wicket. The Panadura boys reached the required target in 34.4 overs and sealed the 27th Sumangala-Moratu limited overs encounter for the 3rd consecutive time by 5 wickets.
