Sudath Sampath to coach Under 20 sevens Tuskers

Former Isipathana, CR & FC and national sevens captain Sudath Sampath has been appointed the head coach of the Under 20 national sevens team by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) ahead of the upcoming under 20 sevens tournament.

One of the most prolific 7s players Sri Lanka produced during the 90’s, Sampath was known in the Asian circuit for his nippy footwork and quick sprints. The former Isipathanian made his debut in the international sevens arena when he turned out in the Lankan colours at the Sicily Rugby Sevens held in Italy in the year 1990. Being a regular since then, Sudath was entrusted with the role of captaincy in the year 1995 when Sri Lanka toured Hong Kong for the Hong Kong 7s.

Sudath SampathCurrently serving as an Inspector at the Sri Lanka Police, Sudath is a Level II qualified World Rugby coach and educator. This will be Sudath’s fifth national assignment in the capacity of coach having already provided his services to the national squad during the years 2006-2008 in the positions of coach and manager.

The newly appointed coach will have to dive right in to the business end of things as he prepares a team for the upcoming under 20 sevens tournament that is set to take place in Malaysia in the coming week.

In addition to the under 20 sevens duties, Sudath will also head the Sri Lanka Sevens Women’s team. The Asia Under 20 Sevens tournament is set to start this weekend and will take place in Malaysia on the 30th and 31st of July 2016. The second leg will kick off in Hong Kong on the 12th and 13th of August 2016.
