St Sebastian’s sports a well-balanced side

St. Sebastian which situated at the heart of Moratuwa boasts of a rich history which dates back to 1854.  The college embraced cricket over the last two centuries and has produced a number of national players who brought glory to the country. Their proud son Duleep Mendis who was famous for his aggressive batting.

Off spinner Roger Wijesuriya, fast bowlers Sajeewa Silva, Dinusha Fernando, Nimesh Perera etc. The Cricket season of the school will end up with the Moratuwa battle, the big match against their traditional rivals Prince of Wales. 

Mr. Hashan Peiris who functions as head coach brings with him a load of experience having played for Bloomfield for 8 years and the Sri Lanka Airforce cricket club for another 8 years. He has also been coach in charge of under 13 and under 15 cricket teams at St Sebastian’s over the past few years.

Second year coloursman captain Anushka Perera leads the team towards the success this season. Being an aggressive batsman he scored about 280 runs including one century and one half century. He bowls leg spin and has managed 8 scalped thus far. Second year coloursman Anuk Fernando, is the vice captain. Being a left arm fast bowler Anuk totaled 31 wickets. Also as a left hand batsman he scored about 130 runs. Anuk is one of the most valued possession of the team as he has represented Sri Lanka in the under 19 World Cup.

The side is fairly well balanced this year. Isuru Mendis who is a right arm leg spinner has triggered many collapses of the oppositions while Nimesh Fernando, his partner in crime is also an off spinner who has obtained a number of wickets in his cricket career. Sangeeth Coorey, Sachinda Gunawardane, Muditha Fernando, Visal Senanayake, Saveen Fernando make up the rest of the side

3rd year colorsman Luke Jayadewa adds to the lineup of batsmen together with Shan Fernando, Sachinda Gunawardane, Sangeeth Coorey, and Pramesh Fernando.

St Sebastian’s have played 8 matches this season and were able to beat two schools while the other matches were drawn. They beat Holy Cross comprehensively scoring 230 runs for 5 wickets while the Holy Cross only scored 120 in the 1st inning and 80 in the seconds. 

A remarkable match took place against St. Peters. The Moratuwa team routed the Bambalapitiya side for a low score of 70 run and 102 in the second.  In this low scoring game, St Sebastian’s affected an outright victory scoring 108 in the 1st innings and 64 in the second to overcome the opponents. 

Their final destination however is meeting rivals Prince of Wales in the big match.
