St. Joseph’s and Visakha take top spots at day 01 of National Age Swimming Championship

National Age Group Swim Day 1

The National Age Group Swimming Championship commenced on the 1st of June at the Sugathadasa swimming pool and will go on until the 5th of June. Read on to check the summary of day 01.

At the end of day 01 St. Joseph’s College toped the leader board with 142 points with Ananda College at second place with 117 points followed by Lyceum International Wattala with 85 points.

On the girl’s side of the tournament, Visakha Vidyalaya topped the leader board with 144 points with Lyceum International Wattala in second place with 103 followed by Mahamaya College Kandy with 87 points.

Ishall Hassim was the only swimmer from St. Joseph’s College to have won gold winning the under 15 200 LC Meter Backstroke event clocking in at 2:36.66. Although St. Joseph’s didn’t win gold at many events, several of the Josephian swimmers managed to get placed in almost all their events adding to their overall points allowing them to take the lead by the end of day 01.

Ananda College who was placed second at the end of day 01 faced a similar situation where only Manula Cooray and Sandev Senaratne won their events. Manula Cooray won gold in the under 18 category 800 LC Meter Freestyle with a timing of 9:31.16 and Sandev Senaratne won the under 18 100 LC Meter Butterfly event with a timing of 59.5.

On the other side of the tournament, the 800 LC Meter Freestyle event was dominated by Visakha Vidyalaya in most age categories. Nimdoli Sadaisin won the event in the under 13 category with a time of 11:30.17. Shehanthi Gunwardena won this event in the under 18 category with a time of 10:07.21 and Gihini Nawala won it in the 18 and over age category with a time of 11:12.97.

The other major wins for Visakha were by Ramudi Samarakoon in the under 18 50 LC Meter Breaststroke event with a timing of 36.33 and by Ganga Senavirathne who won both the 200 LC Meter IM and 200 LC Meter Backstroke in the under 15 age category with timings of 2:48.82 and 2:48.54 respectively.

The second place in the girl’s category, Lyceum Wattala also did well with a couple of swimmers winning gold. A Kalyanasundaram was one of them, in the under 15 category winning the 800 LC Meter Freestyle event clocking in at 10:33.35. In the under 11 category C Ammon won the 50 LC Meter Breaststroke clocking in at 46.05 and S Mahir also brought gold for Lyceum in the under 15 50 LC Meter Breaststroke category with a timing of 38.90.

Although St. Joseph’s and Visakha are in the lead the other teams aren’t trailing too far behind and could still change the tide of the tournament in the coming 4 days.

Day 02 of the tournament will continue at the Sugathadasa swimming pool on the 2nd of June.
