The Sri Lankan Under 14 Chess Players won the Bronze medal at the recently concluded Asian Nations Cup Blitz Chess Championship 2016 in China. 16 teams from 12 Asian countries participated.
The Sri Lankan team won 6 matches, drew with eventual winners Iran and lost a couple of matches to earn 13 points out of the possible 36. Iran won the championship with 15 points while China won the Silver medal with 14 points.
The Sri Lankan team was represented by Harshana Thilakaratne, Sasith Piyumantha, Kulisa Nanayakkara and Ranindu De Silva.
This is the highest team medal won by Sri Lanka at any chess event in Asia.
