The hosts resumed their 1st innings on 189/2 with the experienced pair, Brendon Taylor and Craig Ervin, at the middle on 13 & 55 respectively. The dangerous batsman Brendon Taylor was undone by a brilliant inswinger from Suranga Lakmal who trapped the former Zimbabwe skipper LBW for 21, breaking the threatening 44-run partnership.

Dinesh Chandimal faced an injury scare in just the 2nd ball of the day, as he hurt his finger while diving across at mid-off. He was taken off the field and did not return for the rest of the session.

Then, skipper Sean Williams and Craig Ervin joined for a 39-run partnership, before left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya deceived Williams with extra bounce to find an outside edge through to wicket keeper Niroshan Dickwella. Soon after Lakmal struck again to remove the set batsman Craig Ervin who was on 85.

Suranga Lakmal and Lasith Embuldeniya caused much trouble for the Zimbabwe lower order as they were reduced for 8/309 before the final 2 wickets costed Sri Lanka 49 runs courtesy of Donald Tiripano, who remained unbeaten at the end with a valuable 44.

Zimbabwe batted 5 sessions and a bit more to set a 1st innings total of 358. For Sri Lanka, young Embuldeniya starred with his 2nd 5-fer while Suranga Lakmal showcased what Sri Lanka were missing in the Pakistan Test series with a crucial 3-wicket haul.

In reply, Sri Lanka lost their opener Oshada Fernando for 21 in the brief 14-over spell by Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka were 42/1 at stumps with skipper Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis at the crease.
