Dharmasoka sweep the boards in Southern Province Basketball

Both the boys` and the girls` teams of Dharmashoka College swept the titles in their respective categories as the Southern Province Invitation Basketball Tournament came to an end on Sunday (15th January 2016).

It was the girls` final that took the center stage first. Dharmashoka College took on Sujatha Vidyala, Matara. Dharmashoka College, defending their title successfully, dominated from the start and emerged champions as the final scorecard read 34-16.

Sujatha Vidyalaya lacked accuracy even though their attempts at the hoop were many. On the other hand, Dharmashoka College, made the most of the possession. Fast-breaks, scoring through the lapses of defense, they used all the weapons they have at their disposal as they led the first half 14-05.

Sujatha Vidyala never had the momentum to chase down the deficit and lead the game. Dharmashoka College kept on ticking the scoreboard comfortably as they closed down the game with winning lead of 18 points.

Captain of the Dharmashoka College – Oshini Lakshika speaking to ThePapare.com about the victory said, “I am personally happy about the win since we did not have much time to practice for the tournament. Ravini Shanika, Senuri Prabodhika played well and helped us to win the game”.


The second match was no doubt the highlight for the day. The boys` final which was played between Dharmashoka College and St. Aloysius College took the scoreboard to triple figures. It was a tight game but at the end, a difference of 23 points handed over the victory to Dharmashoka College.

Dasun Nilanthan made the difference for the home team as he used his height perfectly to keep the scoreboard ticking. Dharmashoka College scored 25 points in both the first and the second quarters. The visitors did tick the scoreboard but they lacked the defensive capabilities as they failed to halt the opposition`s onslaught and trailed the game by 19 points at the end of the first half. The first half ended when the scorecard read 50-31.

Coming into the second half Dharmashoka College stole the ball many times as they halted many offensive possessions of the opposition and in return created more for themselves. Shooting from the perimeter was topped by the home team as they gained many points from it.    

Going on a scoring rampage Dharmashoka College got the scoreboard into triple figures and won the game to be crowned champions just as their girls ` team.

Captain of the winning team Shehan Sachintha speaking to ThePapare.com said “I would like to thank the organizing committee for organizing a tournament for us. Also we would like to commend the performance of Dasun Nilantha who played his A grade game today and to everyone in the team for an exceptional performance”.

Dasun Nilantha was named the Most Valuable Player of the boys’ category while both Ruvini Shashrika and Senuri Pramodya won the award in the girl’s category.
