Asian International School Colombo went head to head with Colombo International School for the Consolation Finals in the Girls segment of the Inter International Basketball Championship 2016 last evening.  Colombo International School at the British School in Colombo courts secured the third place spot, with a comfortable win, leading 68-35.

As the first quarter was underway, the two teams took a significant amount of time to settle into the game. Hikari Hatta opened the scoring for CIS, to end the drought of points throughout the first 4 minutes of play. Both teams were somewhat hesitant to drive the lanes, and test the defense. They opted for perimeter shots instead. The percentage of field goals converted was extremely low, as many a shot missed its mark completely. The first quarter ended with none of the teams making a statement. CIS led 9-6.

The defensive strategies of the two teams were evident as the second period progressed. CIS opted for the full court press quite often, a play they’ve been known for throughout this tournament. AIS settled in between, full court and half court man to man strategies. AIS tended to lack the pace on the fast break and the finish on jumpers. CIS also missed on open layups. It seemed that the players still had not fully adjusted to the game at hand. CIs still managed a slim lead at halftime, the scoreboard reading 21-17.

The third quarter was where the complete momentum of the game was run by CIS. Leia and the Hatta sisters ran the show for CIS in the third period. CIS managed a total of 22 points in the quarter (15 of which was contributed by Leia). On the other hand AIS was restricted to 4 baskets. AIS was finding it difficult to move the basketball around, having to face a full court press. The CIS trio were not dealt with and the scoreboard reflected this at the end of the quarter. CIS had broken through the stalemate of the first half, and caused significant damage. CIS led quite comfortably, 43-25 as the third quarter came to a close.

Playing up to the tone set in the third quarter, CIS continued to deliver consistently. Their perseverance on defense until the last whistle, even though showcasing a healthy lead should be commended. AIS showed a few feeble attempts at a comeback, but the deficit rose further away from them. CIS wrapped up the game, 68-35, clinching the third place spot.
