AIS, CIS Kandy, Lyceum Wattala & Nugegoda into Semi- Finals

Defending champions AIS together with Lyceum International School Nugegoda and Wattala and Colombo International School – Kandy have qualified for the Inter-International Basketball Championships. Here’s a look at how these teams made it to the final 4.

Asian International School v Colombo International School – Colombo

AIS got onto a brilliant start and went on to lay a solid foundation for a big score. By scoring twenty points in the maiden quarter to put the pressure right back onto CISC as they only managed sixteen points for the quarter.  Arnold Brent who has been in sublime form added ten points into the quarter for AIS while Dhamshike Piyasena added six and the rest of the points were scored by Vinushka Sanansgama and skipper Taher Akbarally.

It was Shivanga De Silva who opened up the account for CISC with a shot from downtown and he went on to add seven points in the quarter as the scores read 20-16.

AIS capitalizing on the head start, added another twenty-six points in the quarter as they led the game by thirteen points going into lemons. Brent scored thirteen points in the second quarter for AIS and he was assisted well by Joel Perera who chipped in with eight points. CISC only managed to reply with seventeen points as the scorecard 46-33.

After the ten-minute break AIS did not take a step back but went on to ambush the opponents as they scored twenty and nineteen for the third and the fourth quarters respectively. With a double figure surplus, it was a tough ask for the CISC boys to get back into the game with the leakage of points in the defense. They only managed to score 24 points in reply during the third and the fourth quarters.

Arnold Brent top scored in the game with thirty-three points while Shivanga De Silva added thirty-one points for CISC.

Lyceum International School – Nugegoda v Lyceum International School – Panadura

The second quarter final got underway as LISN led the game by nine points after the maiden quarter. LISN scored nineteen points while LISP only managed ten points. Arshad Rafeek scored nine points while Varina Wijesinghe added another six. For LISP Chehan Nawodya added four points while the rest of the team chipped in.

Unfortunately, it was a one sided game from that points onwards as LISP did not depict a major threat for the opposition. LISN added fourteen points in the second quarter and led the game by seventeen points as the half-time scorecard read 33-17.

Going into the third and the fourth quarters LISN kept ticking the scoreboard as they added seven and twelve points respectively. LISP only managed to add seven points each in both quarters.

Arshad Rafeek top scored in the game with fourteen points for LISN while Indisham Naleem and Varina Wijesinghe scored a dozen each.

Lyceum International School – Wattala v Gateway College – Kandy

The Kandy lads led the game by four points at the end of the first ten minutes as they managed to pile up fourteen points in reply to the ten points of LISW. It was a complete team performance by GCK as everyone chipped in and scored points. For LISW Yasith Jayasundara and Irshad did most of the scoring.    

Going into the second quarter of the game GCK still sustained a lead of nine points as the scorecards read 27-18. Both Indrajitha and Dineth scored four points each for GCK while Madhurshan, Santhush and Navindu Weerasinghe added the rest of the points. Nimesh Kulatunga added a couple of points for LISW as they were yet to find touch in the game.

After the ten-minute break LISW, changing strategies in their offense, went on a counter-attack as they scored sixteen points in the third quarter. GCK too kept up as they held territory replying with sixteen points. GCK still led the game by nine points.

Coming into the final six hundred seconds of the game, GCK lost the plot as they only added nine points while LISW topped the game with twenty points.  Nimesh Kulatunga, picking up his game, top-scored in with sixteen points for LISW while Yasith Jayasundara scored eight.

The difference in the last quarter created a two-point deficit in the full time score as GCK lost the game by a couple of points.

Gateway College – Colombo v Colombo International School – Kandy

CISK led the game by five points comfortably as the whistle concluded the first ten minutes of the game. GCC was on nine while CISK was on fourteen. Hirun Rathnayake added four points for GCK while Ryan Kuruppu added a couple. Hamza Harren got the party started with a shot from downtown for CISK as he added nine points in the quarter.

Going into the second quarter of the game both teams scored seven apiece as the half-time scores read 21-18. GCC was yet pick-up their game as it was only Hiruna and Ryan who did their part during the first half of the game.

Finding touch after the half-time break both the teams went hard at each other as they scored twenty points and the scoreboard halted at 36-41 in favor of CISK. It was Hiruna who did most of the scoring for GCC adding twelve points.

GCC added thirteen more in the final quarter just before the buzzer but the nine points from CISK helped them to win the game by a point. Hiruna Rathanayake top scored in the game with twenty-five points while Rayan Kuruppu scored fourteen for GCC. Hamza Haren scored twenty-one points and Kiran Karaliyadda scored fifteen for CISK.
