As the group stages of the Inter-International Basketball tournament continued, Gateway College Colombo played against Lyceum International School – Panadura. This game ended up as a one-sided affair as Gateway College ran away with the game. The fulltime score read 35-87.

The game started off with LISP getting first possession of the ball but it was GCC who was able to capitalize on this by intercepting a pass and scoring first. The first point LISP scored was from a shooting foul halfway into the quarter. The LISP zone defense proved to be no obstacle for Ryan Kuruppu as he drove in to the rim, scoring one after the other giving GCC a decent lead.

Hirun Rathnayake topped the rebound cards as he used his height to box out the LISP players and etched almost all the rebounds for GCC. The key point for GCC was that they passed the ball around the perimeter and involved all five players in offense. LISP failed to take clean shots as the GCC defense continued to top each air born shot making it very difficult to close the gap between the teams.

GCC continued to showcase their dominance over their opponents by scoring first and opting for a strong zone defense that LISP found very difficult to get accustomed to. LISP opted to substitute their youngest player Sajjaad in, who surprisingly turned out to be their best shooter from beyond the perimeter knocking down a couple of 3’s; it was not enough to catch up to the large deficit.

Third Quarter: Lyceum International School – Panadura- 25 Gateway College – Colombo- 67

By the start of the final ten minutes, victory was all but assured for Gateway. Although the LISP players got through the defenders with some fancy dribbling and crossovers, it wasn’t backed up by good shots. Even though the victory was almost assured GCC didn’t let up at any point as they even switched to a full court press to steal the ball from the first pass to score faster.
