Twenty two Sri Lankan National swimmers & divers left the Island this morning to participate in the 9th Asian Age Group Championships, 2017 in Uzbekistan.

The Asian Age Group Championship organized by the Asia Aquatic Association is the premier event for all Asian countries as swimmers and divers from all age groups visit to compete at the international stage.

A total of 22 swimmers and divers left the island for Uzbekistan and are geared up for the beginning of the event on the 9th of September and is expect to go on for a duration of 8 days.

The Sri Lankan swimming team comprises of the top performers in the circuit, taking into consideration their recent performances in the swimming meets, including the national events as well as the Schools Swimming Championships.

The 2016 South Asia Aquatic Championship was also based targeting the Asian Age Group Championships as it provided the selectors the initial cut on shortlisting the prospective swimmers for the future.

“One of the main motives of the South Asian Aquatic Championship that took place in November last year was to prep the swimmers for the Age Group Championship as well as provide the swimmers with the exposure of an international event” added Migara Gunathilake, Secretary of the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union earlier this year.

Sri Lanka will be led by experienced swimmer and Asia Schools Swimming Championship silver medalist, Peterite Akalanka Peiris alongside national prospect from Hillwood College Kandy, Dilrukshi Perera.

Don Janaka and Dinesh Dayananda are the swimming coaches while Chanaka Wickramasinghe is the diving coach. Shehan Dias will be the manager.
