The Sri Lanka Taekwondo team that participated at the 7th Tirak Taekwondo International Championship which was held in the Thailand from the 20th to 22nd October has impressed, winning 6 individual medals and an overall 2nd place in the female team sparring event.

The 7th Edition of the Tirak Taekwondo International Championship saw 21 countries sending in over 700 contestants for the championship which was held at the Assumption University Sports Complex in Thailand. The Sri Lankan team which was coached by Ruwan Alahakoon consisted of 5 female and 2 male contestants and managed to win a medal in all but one category. In a performance of note, the Sri Lankan contestants managed to secure 4 Gold medals out of 8 available in the Women’s category. The Sri Lankan Women’s team also managed to finish second in the team sparring event.

Speaking to ThePapare.com from Thailand, coach of the victorious Sri Lankan contingent Ruwan Alahakoon had this to say

“It wasn’t easy. Each athlete wanted to do their best. Their mentality was highly influential for this victory. They executed the game plan well. We had a great challenge from Thai, Omani and Nepalese teams but we managed to secure 4 gold medals out of 8 in the Women’s division. I’m really proud of my team. This experience will help in them for the upcoming National and International tournaments. I would like to thank, Vice Chancellor and Director of Physical education, University of Kelaniya for giving their financial support for this event and Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation for their encouragement”
