South Africa finish with consolation win

espite a collapse that saw them slip from 60/1 to post 109/9, South Africa finished their ICC Women’s World T20 2018 with a 30-run win over Bangladesh in the final match of the group stage.

Put in at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia on Sunday, 18 November, South Africa finally got the kind of start they had desperately lacked in the other games. Marizanne Kapp at No.3 again top-scored for them, and at 60 in the ninth over, the team were set for a competitive total.

However, the Bangladesh spinners came back strongly. A mixture of good balls and poor shot selection saw a familiar batting meltdown on the part of the South Africans.

Bangladesh were in with a chance to take the fourth place in the group if they knocked off the runs quickly, but even in the absence of Shabnim Ismail, they couldn’t cut loose.

The South African bowlers, easily the team’s strength this tournament, choked the Bangladesh batters – a total of 79/5 shows just how much.

With this, South Africa finished third and Bangladesh last in the group, without a win.
