Proteas ahead on day 1 of 2nd unofficial Test

SL-E team tour of South Africa 2019 | 2nd Unofficial Test

A classy ton from Proteas skipper Raynard Van Tonder put the South Africa Emerging team ahead on day 1 of the 2nd unofficial Test against the Sri Lanka Emerging team at Pretoria on Thursday, 25th July.

It was yet again a tough morning for the visitors who won the toss and elected to field first. The 18-year old left-arm seamer, Kalana Perera was brought in to the playing XI in place of Asitha Fernando while Hasitha Boyagoda, Ashen Bandara and Kamindu Mendis made way for Lahiru Udara, Pramod Maduwantha and Jehan Daniel.

The South African openers managed a 50-run stand, but both failed to convert the start they got. Van Tonder picked up from them and raced to a top-quality hundred. He made 122 runs in his 291-minute stay at the crease for the day.

Jason Smith, who had a poor run in the previous game, scored 34 runs to support his team.

Matthew Breetzke who scored a match-winning ton in the first game, failed to make an impact in South Africa’s first innings as he was edged out by Lasith Embuldeniya for just 13 runs.

Wicket-keeper batsman, Sinethemba Qeshile joined his skipper at 173 for 4. The pair snatched the day away from the visitors instantly and started piling up the runs at their will. They posted a 148-run stand and remained unbeaten at the close of play.

The Lankans opened their bowling with an up and coming pair of fast bowlers, Mohammad Shiraz and Kalana Perera. Shiraz, who was impressive in the first game, could not manage a breakthrough to give his team the kind of start they wanted. Young Perera looked nippy with the new ball but went wicketless in his 8-over spell on day 1.

It was Embuldeniya who still remained a mystery to the Proteas. They could not decode the young left-arm spinner as he bagged 3 scalps by the end of the day. Yet, he had to put in a lot of work for that throughout the day. The former Royalist bowled 30 overs and picked up 3 wickets for 102 runs setting a perfect example for how temperament pays off in the longer format.

The Sri Lankans will have a bit of work to do to get back into the game come day 2.
