The 86th Sir John Tarbet Senior Athletic championship commenced on the 13th of September at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium with the participation of over 3200 athletes.

Inaugurated in the year 1920 this is the oldest athletic meet of the country. This is year’s championship is also a qualification trial for the Asian Junior Athletic Championship where the athletes who are not part of a school are not considered for medal, but will take part in events to in a bid to qualify for the aforementioned Championship.

The first day of the meet saw three meet records being broken by the aspiring young athletes. Thivanka Ushan of Maris Stella College, Negombo surpassed the previous meet record with a jump of 2.17m in the High jump event for boys Under 20 clearing the previous record by a centimeter. In the U20 Discuss throw Malinda Madhushanka from St. Rita’s College, Thaldeka got into the record books with a new meet record of 47.72 meters while Napthail Jason joined the party vaulting a height of 4.56m to win the U 18 Pole vault event renewing his own record established at the previous meet.

Three more new meet records were established on the second day, the 14th of September, at Diyagama. MS Kumarasinghe of A Ratnayake Central College, Walala established a new meet record in the Under-18 Girls’ 800m final. Kumarasinghe clocked 2:13.4 minutes, erasing the previous record of 2:14.8 minutes set by Nelum Kularatne of Elapatha MMV, Ratnapura in 2004. The day’s second record was created by Ridma Nishadi of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda in the Girls’ Under-16 Triple Jump final. Nishadi’s record distance was 12.21 metres to win the gold.

A Ratnayake Central College, Walala’s AK Madushanka set up a new meet record in the Boys’ Under-18 2000m Steeple Chase final with a winning time of 6:05.9 minutes.

Under-16 400m Hurdles: Kumod Hansindu (Dharmapala, Pannipitiya) 56.6 secs and Sihal Dakshitha (Maris Stella College, Negombo) 57.3 secs.

Under-18 400m Hurdles: PL Kodikara (Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala) 54.6 secs, Shehan Lahiru (Maris Stella College, Negombo) 55.9 secs.

Under-20 Pole Vault: S Dilakshan (Mahanajana College, Thelippalai) 4.30m

Under-16 200m: Piumini Weerasooriya (St Joseph’s BMV, Kegalle) 26.3 secs, Sadeepa Henderson (Gateway College, Rajagiriya) 26.6 secs and Yashini Dahanayake (Yasodara Vidyayala, Colombo) 26.8 secs.
