Sri Lanka added three more medals to their medal tally to conclude their successful campaign in tennis at the South Asian Games 2016 with a total of six bronze medals.
All of the Sri Lankan side will make their return to the country with silverware in the coming days. In addition to the medals won previously, three more medals came from the Men’s singles and Women’s doubles.
Earlier in the tournament, the Lankans secured bronze medals from the Mixed Doubles and the Men’s Doubles. This added up to three medals altogether as both contestants for the third place spot were Lankan pairs. Thereby they were declared joint bronze medal winners.
In a similar fashion, the Women’s doubles ended up giving Sri Lanka two bronze medals since both Sri Lankan pairs ended up in the third spot. It was Amritha Muttiah, Thisuri Molligoda, Medhira Samarasinghe and Nethmi Waduge who got the honour of getting their hands on the silverware.

Sri Lanka’s last medal hope, Shamal Dissanayaka pulled out a splendid performance against top seeded player Ramanathan Ramkumar who has an ATP ranking of 211 in the semi final. Unfortunately Dissanayaka lost the game 6/4, 7/5 and later on was able to earn himself a Bronze medal in the third place play off.
With six medals secured in 2016 South Asian Games, Sri Lanka stole the second spot from Pakistan in the medal tally in Tennis behind India. This was indeed a significant achievement taking to consideration the ranking in which Pakistan stands in the ITF main board.
The two stalwarts of the sport, Harshana Godamanne and Amritha Muttiah will arrive home with two bronze medals along with 19-year-old Shamal Dissanayaka who got two under his name.
