Left arm spinners Savindu Uthsara (10/53) and Sithuka Gunawardana (8/50) guided Isipathana College to a comprehensive victory over St. Benedict’s College in the Singer Schools ‘Under 19 Division 1’ Two Day Cricket Tournament 2019/20 which was worked off today in Colombo. Another encounter between Ananda College and Dharmasoka College commenced today at the Ananda College Grounds.   

St. Benedict’s College, Colombo vs Isipathana College, Colombo

Isipathana College registered a comprehensive 10-wicket win over St. Benedict’s College in their group A encounter which was worked off today at St. Benedict’s College Grounds in Colombo. After being asked to bat first, the hosts were bundled out for 141 runs yesterday. Pasan Suwahas (30) and Sanoj Perera (28) were the chief contributors with the bat for the Bens.

The left arm spinner Savindu Uthsara bowled brilliantly for the visitors as he finished with the figures of 6 for 40. In addition, the other left arm spinner in the side Sithuka Gunawardana took 3 scalps for 31 runs, giving good support to him at the other end. In reply, Isipathana batsmen fell just 6 runs short of the hosts’ first innings as they were shot out for 135 runs in 69.2 overs. 

The 18-year old left arm spinner Malinda Perera was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts as he grabbed 4 wickets for just 29 runs. The Bens began their second innings 6 runs ahead but an unexpected batting collapse saw them being bowled out for just 42 runs setting an easy target of 49 runs to win for the visitors.

Sithuka Gunawardana and Savindu Uthsara who impressed with the ball in the first innings, ripped through the batting lineup of St. Benedict’s College taking 5 wickets and 4 wickets respectively. The visitors were in a hurry in the run chase as they chased down the target with ease without losing any wickets.

Ananda College, Colombo vs Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda

The traditional encounter between Ananda College and Dharmasoka College commenced today at the Ananda College Grounds in Colombo. After winning the toss, the Sokian skipper opted to bat first and they managed to post a solid 237 runs all-out in 57 overs. Hasitha Rajapaksha was the top scorer for the visitors as he scored 51 runs to his name.

Sanula Gunarathne (44) and Sachindu Malshan (42) also chipped in with valuable contributions with the bat for the lads from the South. Isuru Ayesh (3/54), Dasun Tharuka (2/39) and Deneth Nissanka (2/60) shone with the ball for the hosts.  

In reply, Ananda College batsmen got off to a good start with the bat but lost three quick wickets as they finished day one on 116 runs for 3 wickets in 21 overs. The left-handed stroke maker Kanishka Ranthilakage made a classy half ton and Anuga Jayaweera remained unbeaten on 37 runs for the hosts. Match will continue tomorrow for day two.
