Saumya and Chamal win silver medals

Saumya Sooriyampola and P.H. Chamal added two more silver medals to Sri Lanka’s tally while women’s captain Jani Chathurangi won a bronze medal on the opening day of the athletics competition of Lusofonia Games held at GMC Sports Complex Bamboliam, India yesterday.

 

Sooriyampola was the first to win the silver medal with an effort of 1.68 metres in the women’s high jump.

Even though Sri Lanka expected a gold from her it seemed she had a hard time getting to her full form early in the season.

N.D. Tintu of India won the gold with a 1.75m jump.

P.H. Chamal was the second to win the silver medal in the men’s 1500m. Alberto Mamba of Mozambique won the gold with 4 minutes 6.90 seconds. Afsal Mohammed of India finished third.

Women’s captain Jani Chathurangi clocked 12.19 seconds to win the bronze medal in the 100m. Archana Suseentran of India won the gold with 11.98 seconds while Ruma Deipen Sarkar (India) finished second in 12.16 seconds.

Only Umanga Surendra failed to win a medal out of the four Sri Lankans who took to the track as he finished the 100m fourth with a 10.99 seconds performance.
