SAG 2019 kicks off amidst fanfare in Kathmandu

South Asia’s biggest multi-sport competition, the 13th South Asian Games, kicked off with the excitement of a grand opening ceremony at the Dasarath Stadium in the Nepali capital of Kathmandu.

Over 10,000 athletes in 28 sports are all set to participate in the event over the course of the next 10 days, at the Dasarath Stadium and the Pokhara Stadium.

The opening ceremony of the event took place a short while ago with Nepali president Bidhya Devi Bhandari gracing the occasion as chief guest.

Along with her excellency Bidhya Devi Bhandari, President of the South Asian Olympic Committee Jeevan Ram Shrestha, South Asian Games Executive Committee President Ramesh Silwal, Organizing Committee President and Minister of Youth and Sport in Nepal Jagat Bahadur Bishwakarma and Deputy Primie Minister and Minister of Defense Ishwor Pokharel were present at the event.

600 Sri Lankan athletes, set to compete in 27 events all attended the grand opening ceremony under the Lion flag, with National Javelin Throw Champion Nadeeka Lakmali leading the team out.
