Jnr Tarbet round up

47th Sir John Tarbet   junior athletic meet concluded today in Embilipitiya. Held with the participation of a large number of young budding athletes, the meet had a total of 9 records broken this year.

With the competition spanning over 04 days, it was evident that there is abundant talent in the island but the organizing left much to be desired. The dates of the meet was not great as athletes who participated at the All-Island School games in Kandy over 5 days had to travel to Embilipitiya for the Junior Tarbet meet which spanned for 04 days without proper rest.  It’s also reported that there were several delays as the organisers found it difficult to handle the large number of athletes. Some athletes have had to wait over an hour after their first jump in the long jump event to take their next jump.

Shemal Malinda Perera of St Mary’s College Chilaw who was impressive in the All-Island School Games last week, laid claim to the best Athlete award. Perera clinched gold in 200m with a performance of 22.8Secs shattering the previous meet record of 23.04secs.

The aspiring young athlete from Gateway College, Colombo Sadeepa Henderson also continued her good form in Kandy, with a record equaling leap of 5.32m in the long jump to be awarded the best athlete award. She was also adjudged the Best Long Jumper at the meet.

D Dhanusha Dahanayake from Yasodara BV Colombo was adjudged the best 400m runner at the event.

Overall Girls segment was dominated by Colombo schools with Gateway College Colombo finishing third, St Bridget’s Convert second with Ladies college Colombo grabbing the Champions trophy,

In the Boys segment Maris Stella College, Negombo clinched the third place with St. Joseph’s College Colombo were runners up. St Benedict’s College was crowned champions for the year 2016.
