U17 Cricket – S. Thomas’, Mahanama and Thurstan qualify for quarters

Under 17 Round of 16 Cricket Update

The under 17 division 1 limited overs cricket tournament which is played for the Singer Trophy has come to a temporary halt as the schools near the second term examinations. The tournament already in the knockout phase has seen 3 teams move to the quarter finals.

Thomians prevail in low scoring encounter

In the round of 16 S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia beat St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya by 90 runs at Mount Lavinia after a brilliant all round performance by Kishan Munasinghe who scored 49 and grabbed 3/16.

Mahanama College, Colombo beat Richmond College, Galle by 2 wickets at Mattegoda. It was a low scoring match as Richmond College batting first managed to score only 180 with Thaveesha Abhishek scoring a valiant 89. However, Mahanama College was able to overcome their early jitters to scrape past the low total with the help of Pawantha Weerasinghe who scored 62.

In another low scoring game Thurstan College, Colombo hosted Wesley College in a nerve wracking win of 16 runs.  Batting first Thurstan College scored a paltry 153 runs with Jayavihan Mahavithana top scoring an unbeaten 47. Coming into bat, Wesley College was sensing an easy win. However, confidence being their downfall were bowled out for 137 with just 16 runs required. Rahul Gunasekara top scored with a fighting 52 and it was Chithral Silva doing the damage for Thurstan as he captured 4 wickets for 23 runs.

The remaining matches to be played in the round of 16 will resume after the 2nd term examinations.
