League champions Royal College Colombo were in the spotlight at the Singer School Rugby Awards that was held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Convention Hall this evening.

Singer Sri Lanka, who are the primary sponsors for school rugby in the country awarded the high-flyers and champions of the different divisions of the school rugby arena with their respective silverware. Present at the ceremonious event, the Director of Marketing and Communications Mr. Mahesh Wijewardena applauded the teams of the three divisions for showcasing true sportsmanship throughout the season and mentioned that Singer Sri Lanka will opt to continue the empowerment to the sport in the future as well. The 2015 season was the 12th edition of the Singer Schools Rugby League where Royal College ended up winning the top division.

A total of over 200 school participated in the 2015 edition of the Schools Rugby League ranging from Division I to II and sub-categorized as A,B & C. Royal College took the most valued possession of the day which was the Division I title followed by Isipathana College who came in as runners-up.  Both Isipathana and Royal got another additive to their trophy cabinet having won their respective groups in the first round.

Losing out in the first round, Wesley College and St. Anthony’s College were able to get some satisfaction as the former took home the Plate champions trophy and the latter followed up with the runner-up title.

The emerging schools compiled the Division III where St. Anthony’s College Wattala emerged champions in Segment C while St. Aloysious College Galle and Rahula College Matara were adjudged winners of the B and A segments respectively.

The Division II Segment A saw the emergence of an outstation school coming up the ranks to win the runner-up of the segment and Richmond College Galle took the honors to win the division.

Speaking at the event, President of the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association, Ranjith Chandrasekara mentioned that the sport has to be played in true spirit and not with any hatred or violence. He also stressed that the true meaning of sportsmanship will only arrive if the two teams learn to respect one another and not act with unnecessary violence.

It was a sign of development to see the emerging teams getting themselves motivated after receiving their respective silverware that would probably give them the adequate push to perform better in this coming season.
