Revan and Nipun stroke tons as St. Joseph’s dominate day one

Four matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 commenced today around the island.

St. Joseph’s College, Colombo vs Wesley College, Colombo

The hosts won the toss and opted to bat first on their home soil and dominated Wesley bowlers with ease as two of their top order batsmen scored 150’s in their 101st encounter played for the Bryan Claessan/Arthur Hakel Trophy.

Left handed stroke maker Revan Kelly top scored with a fine 182 while captain Nipun Sumanasinghe stroked 156 runs not out for St. Joseph’s as they recorded a stunning 314-run stand for the 2nd wicket, which is also a record for the Darley Road lads.

Kelly and Sumanasinghe equals the all time schools record of 314 runs partnership for any wicket, the record was held by Sumithra Warnakulasuriya 181 and Ajit Devasurendra 120 for the 3rd wicket against Trinity College in 1981.

In reply, Wesley College was 72 for no wicket at stumps on day one.

Ananda College, Colombo vs St. Peter’s College, Colombo

The clash between Ananda College and St. Peter’s College commenced today at St. Peter’s College. The visitors batted first and were bowled out just 151 runs. In reply, St. Peter’s got off to a strong start in their innings as they finished day one on 147 runs for 2 wickets.

St. Benedict’s won the toss and decided to invite the opposition into bat first on their home ground. The visitors struggled to cope up with the disciplined bowling efforts of St. Benedict’s as they were bowled out for just 86 runs.

Maheesh Theekshana was the star with the ball as he picked up 5 wickets for 19 runs. In reply, the hosts managed to get a decent lead over Dharamasoka College on day one with 201 runs one the board. Maheesh Theekshana showed his all-round skills with a valuable 106 runs not out for Benedict’s.

Trinity College, Kandy vs Moratu Maha Vidyalaya, Moratuwa

Trinity College dominated the day one’s play against Moratu Maha Vidyalaya at Asgiriya grounds. Host team declared their first innings at 262 runs for 9 wickets and got 3 quick wickets of the visitors for 53 runs before the end of first day’s play. Match will continue tomorrow for day two.
