St. Peter’s College managed to hold off Zahira College to a goalless draw before winning on penalties 4-3 in the third place play off in the U18 Division I Schools’ Football Championship encounter held at the Kew Points Road.

Zahira lost to St. Joseph’s College also on penalties in the semi-finals while St.Peter’s faced a shock defeat at the hands of St.Patrick’s College in the same stage.
St. Peter’s were without a few of their star players with experienced Shabeer Rasooniya slotting to center back position while Zahira played their usual XI.
Zahira started the game bright creating opportunities early on. Despite being put into action for more than few occasions, Peterite goalkeeper Isravelu Mithurshan was upto the challenges thrown at him.

Despite continuing to dominate possession, Zahira failed to create clear cut chances against a resolute defense. Along with the custodian Mithurshan, the Sri Lankan U19 national Shabeer Rasooniya made sure the boys from Bambalapitiya went into half time without conceding a goal.

Zahira started the second half with the same dominance as the first half. Mohamed Hammad unleashed a sharp hit but the shot missed the target by inches.
St. Peter’s had their first shot of the match in the second half through a set piece. Rasooniya’s free kick found Daniel McGrath but his effort was off target. Mithurshan made another important save to deny Mohamed Aaqib a certain goal from another free kick.
Rasooniya made some crucial interception at the end to make sure Zahira didn’t spoil their efforts with a late goal as the match ended goalless after normal time.

The match moved into penalties as Zahira looked to put their ghosts from the semi-final to bed. However, they failed to win for the second consecutive time on penalties as St. Peter’s successfully converted four penalties to win 4-3.
