Queens Club Open Ranking Tennis Championship

An ‘A’ grade open ranking Tennis Championship 2013 will take place from 12th January to 4th of February 2013 it was revealed at a media conference held this evening. This will be conducted under the umbrella of Queen’s club, the Tennis section of the Gymkhana Club.

Every measure has been taken to conduct this championship on a grand scale. Coming in as sponsors Nation Lanka Finance PLC and Anilana Hotels and Resorts, very lucrative cash prizes which exceed rupees one million will be on offer for the winners. The Gymkhana club has produced number of Tennis players who have won the international chamionships. P.S. Kumara, Arjun  Fernando, Umesh Walloopillei, Niranjan Cassie Chettyare being some of them. 

Commencing on 12th January, there will be Boys and Girls singles and doubles under the age limits of 10,12,14,16 and 18. The events will be competed in the Men’s, Women’s open singles and Doubles-  mixed and open doubles and a senior’s doubles event over the ages o 40, 50, 60 and 70years.

Further featured will be the Wheel Chair Singles and Doubles events. The aim of this event is to uplift the social conditions of the disabled Tennis players. Therefore it will be competed for a cash prize of Rs 40.000 to the winner of the wheel chair men’s singles event.

According to the organizers of the championship from next year the tournament will look at attracting international players and escalating the competition level.

The deadline for the entries of the championship is 4th of January 2013 with the draw to be held on 9th January 2013 at 5.00 pm at the Gymkhana club. This will be held under the patronage of Mr Asanga Seneviratne Tennis convener, Mr. Saliya Jayasuriya Tennis secretary and many others.
