Sri Lanka’s most prestigious event in the junior Golf calendar, the Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship 2018 comes alive at the kick off of the new year from the 2nd – 4th January, at the Royal Colombo Golf Club.

In their 11th successive year, Prima Ceylon continues to sponsor the biggest event of Sri Lanka Junior Golf, through their premier Prima Sunrise brand.

At the media conference to set things in gear, Mr. Shun Tien Shing, the General Manager of Ceylon Agro Industries and long-term enabler of Junior Golf in Sri Lanka, handed the sponsorship to Ret. Air Chief Marshal Mr. Harsha Abeywickrama, the President of the Sri Lanka Golf Union.

The Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship remains the acid test for juniors who are also required to make it through grueling Regional Junior Opens, also sponsored by Prima Ceylon.

Thus, the event has established the benchmark for national rankings of junior golf. The winner of this event will go on to be crowned the National Junior Champion in both the Boy’s and Girl’s categories.

This event will once again be conducted according to four age groups as follows; 15-18 years (Gold Division), 12-14 years (Silver Division), 10-11 years (Bronze Division) and 9 years and under (Copper Division). The play will include the standard 18-holes and the winners will be crowned National Champions of 2018.

Reigning Junior Champion Vinod Weerasinghe who is currently in the USA is expected to return to the island in time to defend his title. Vinod, the top ranked junior, who has already won this prestigious event twice before is very heavily tipped to retain the title this year as well.

However, a quartet of young golfing talent namely S. Dhuwarshan, Aaron Aslam, Nirekh Tejwani and Yannik Kumara are expected to provide stiff competition to Vinod this year provided these talented youngsters steady their temperament under pressure.

In the girl’s category, top junior golfers Taniya Minel Balasooriya and Kayla Perera are expected to fight tooth and nail for the title, once again. Often found the best of the juice in the girl’s pool, expect a cracking showdown from the two youngsters come January.

In the younger age categories, K Danushan, Shanal inuksha, Levon Niyarepola, Reshan Algama, Sherin Balasuriya, Kavindha Samarasekara, M. Lidhurshan, M.S Sanjey and C. Dharaniyan from Nuwara Eliya have been identified as the emerging talent.

This event should provide these players a golden opportunity to showcase their skills and it is hoped the youngsters play to their fullest potential. Prima Sunrise will, as always, provide nutrition for the players during the event.
