North Western wins National Sports Festival Volleyball titles


North Western Province won both the Men’s and Women’s championships at the 43rd National Sports Festival Volleyball tournament at the Kotawila Indoor Stadium, Matara.

North Western Province (NWP) defeated Sabaragamuwa Province and Western Province to win the men’s and women’s finals respectively.

Men’s Category

North Western Province defeated Sabaragamuwa Province 25-19, 25-19 & 25-22 to win the final.


In the semi-finals, North Western after an enthralling battle defeated last year’s champions Western Province. NWP won the 1st two sets 25-20 & 25-23. However, Western Province stormed back to win the next two rather easily 17-25 & 18-25. Though Western lead early in the deciding set NWP held their nerve to win the 5th set 15-12.

In the other semi-final Sabaragamuwa Province defeated North Central Province in straight sets, 26-24, 25-22 & 25-18. Western Province secured third place defeating North Central Province 27-25, 25-19 & 25-14.

Kasun Keerthirathna of NWP was adjudged the best player of the final. It was a brilliant performance from NWP, who only had one Sri Lanka national player in Kasun Fernando while Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces had a few Sri Lanka national and U23 players in their ranks.

Women’s Category

North Western Province defeated last year’s champions Western Province 25-20, 25-15 & 25-21 to win the final.


Western Province defeated Southern Province 25-18, 25-20 & 25-18 in the semi-final while North Western Province prevailed in 4 sets against Sabaragamuwa Province winning 25-15, 18-25, 25-16 & 25-13.

Sabaragamuwa Province won 3rd place with a 19-25, 25-18, 25-18 & 25-18 win over Southern Province. Sri Lanka U23 player Ridmi Fernando of NWP was adjudged the best player of the final.
