Champion middle distance runner from Sooriyawewa Nimali Liyanarachchi delivered as expected to win the 800m, while Indunil Herath and men’s 4X100m relay team finished second in the Asian Grand prix 2015, 1st leg held at National Stadium, Bangkok, yesterday.

Nimali clocked a modest 2 minutes 7.18 seconds but that was more than enough for her to seal the first place ahead of Vietnam’s Do Thi Thai who finished second. Gayanthika Abeyratne finished in a disappointing 4th position with 2 minutes 7.95 seconds.

Men’s 800m runner Indunil Herath clocked a seasonal best of 1 minute 49.95 seconds to finish second in the men’s 800m finals which was won by Indian Jinson Johnson with a 1 minute 49.52 seconds performance. Men’s 4X100m relay quartet comprising Himasha Eashan, Shehan Ambepitiya, Mohammad Rajas Khan and Mohammad Ashroff clocked another impressive 39.58 seconds to finish second behind Hong Kong, though they beat strong relay quartets of host Thailand and China.

Javelin thrower Waruna Lakshan finished in a disappointing 6th position with an unimpressive 71.09m throw. Lakshan threw 76m at the concluded Asian Championship in early June to finish 4th and a similar distance could have secured him third place, as the third place of the event was won by Chinese Li Yingchang with a 72.92m throw. Manjula Kumara Wijesekara finished 5th with a best jump of 2:19m in the men’s high jump, while long jumper Amila Jayasiri finished in 8th place with a 7.11m jump.

In the men’s 400m Kalinga Kumarage clocked 47.05 seconds and finished second in the final 2, even though his overall position from the two finals was 5th place. Anjana Gunaratne who finished 3rd in the same race with 47.32 seconds was placed 7th overall.
