Akalanka Peiris of St. Peter’s College attained a milestone in his swimming career when he broke the 50m Short Course National record, previously held by the great Matthew Abeysinghe, on day 02 of the National and Junior National SC Swimming Championship 2019.

Day 1 Results: Hiruki and Nabashie shine with records on day 1 of SC Nationals

Matthew Aeysinghe’s teammate at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games 2018, 20-year old Akalanka Peiris is the proud record holder in the 50m Long Course format. He established this record at the Youth Olympic Games 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina with a timing of 26.33seconds.

On the 7th April and the 2nd day of the National Short Course Meet, Akalanka Peiris edged past Matthew Abeysinghe’s 25.57 second record with a timing of 25.50 seconds.

The 50m Backstroke event saw another record being renewed in the Junior Girls category, with Akithmi Wasalathanthri breaking a record set back in 2016. She clocked in at 31.59 seconds in the finals of the 50m Backstroke to best the previous record by almost 2 whole seconds (33.45).
