Mowbray College Kandy caused the biggest uproar in the Under 19 division of the Inter School Tennis champions where they registered convincing wins against the top schools in the divison but did not have the luck to book a place in the semi finals.

Earlier in the day Ladies College registered a convincing win against Holy Family Convent winning four games out of the total of five. The LC’ites booked themselves the berth at the Semi Finals with a whitewash against Methodist writing a clean sheet 5/0 game win.

With Ladies College getting their qualification ticket in Group A, Holy Family Convent were the next team to qualify for the Semi’s when they humiliated Methodist College with another 5/0 game win. Methodist College were poorly annihilated by both teams as they failed to secure a single game win in any of the matches they played.

The B group had the likes of the heavy weights such as Museaus, Visakha and Bishop’s College while Mowbray College was the newest addition to the format. Defending champions Visakha Vidyalaya were the heavyweight in the category where they had clean sheets against Bishop’s College, Museaus College & Mowbaray College not allowing a single opponent to score getting a direct qualification to the Semi’s.

Earlier in the afternoon it was Mowbray College who made the biggest upset in the tournament with their convincing 3 games to 2 win over Museaus College. Mowbray College who came with the minimum possible resources were able to make the best out of the available opportunities.

With both Bishop’s College and Mowbray College competing for the last spot in the Semi Finals, the decisive point came down to the final doubles between the two teams. Bishop’s College had the final spot booked under their name at the end as the final pair was successful in registering a win.

Mowbray’s efforts are indeed commendable, coming down to Colombo and playing the tournament in the absence of a proper coaching staff to guide them as well. Despite their loss, they indeed have made history in their record books.

The semi-finals will be worked off tomorrow at the SLTA hard courts starting from 8.00 a.m. and the finals will take place on Friday starting at 8.00 a.m.
