Moratuwa & Sabaragamuwa wins Inter Uni Volleyball championships

University of Moratuwa and University of Sabaragamuwa won the men’s and women’s Inter University Games Volleyball Championships respectively at the Rajarata University Gymnasium.

A total of 28 teams (14 men’s and 14 women’s) competed from 4 groups in the two men’s and women’s categories.

Men’s Category

University of Moratuwa (UoM) defeated University of Kelaniya (UoK) in a tense 3 sets to 2  win the men’s championship.

In the semi-finals UoM defeated University of Colombo 3-1 and UoK defeated University of Sri Jayawardenapura 3-1. In the 3rd place match University of Sri Jayawardenapura beat University of Colombo. Colombo was crippled in the business stages of the tournament after their Sri Lanka national pool player Sandun Wimalsena got injured in the group stage.

In the best of 3 sets quarter finals Colombo defeated Rajarata 2-0, Kelaniya beat Peradeniya 2-0, Moratuwa beat Ruhuna 2-0 and Sri Jayawardenapura beat South Eastern University 2-0.

Women’s Category

University of Sabaragamuwa (UoS) defeated University of Rajarata (UoR) 3 sets to 1 to win the women’s championship.

With two Sri Lanka U23 players in their ranks, Vinodi Kaushalya and Ridmi Fernando, Sabaragamuwa had the upper hand throughout the tournament.

In the semi-finals UoS defeated UoC 3-0 and UoR defeated University of Peradeniya 3-0. University of Colombo defeated University of Peradeniya to win the women’s 3rd place match.

In the best of 3 sets quarter finals Colombo defeated Moratuwa 2-0, Rajarata defeated Sri Jayawardenapura 2-0, Peradeniya beat Kelaniya 2-1 and Sabaragamuwa defeated Ruhuna 2-0.
