MERCANTILE RUGBY SEVENS

The 46th edition of the Mercantile Rugby Football “Sevens” along with the inaugural Mercantile Womens Tag Rugby Tournament 2016 will be held on 15th , 16th & 17th July at the CR&FC Grounds, Longdon Place, Colombo 07.

Around 40 mens teams are expected to participate. The much looked forward tournament inaugurated in 1966 is conducted by the Mercantile Rugby Football Association  (MRFA), with the full blessings of the SLRFU.

The MRFA is now under its new President, former Peterite, Shanaka Fernando (53) who  has the unique record of participating  in 30 tournaments out of 45  held up to date. He started playing for Health & Co. just out from school in 1982; he later joined Metropolitan Group and continued to play for them continuously for over 25 years; his last Mercantile “Sevens” was in 2013 on his 50th birthday. The New MRFA Secretary is Dinushka Jayatissa from Ceylon Tobacco Co.

MRFA whilst calling for entries from the affiliated firms and  new comers had meeting with the Captains & Secretaries from the prospective teams on Monday, 27th June , 6.00 pm at the CR&FC Pavilion Lounge. All the intricate details on rules, playing conditions and  other aspects pertaining to  “Sevens” were thoroughly explained by the two rugby veterans, Wimal Perera and S.W. Chang.

The entries for the tournament will close on Friday, 01st July and the draw for groupings will be held on Friday, 08th July, 6.00 pm at the CR&FC Pavilion lounge.
