When men in wheels took to Malaysia

The venerated veterans of the Sri Lankan Forces have once again proved worthy of themselves, this time, at the Malaysian Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament 2017.

Gamini Dissanayake, the man who never fails to mark the Sri Lankan territory on the world’s map, has wheeled his way up to the finals this time around in the Men’s Singles category. Dissanayake who currently stands in the 89th position in the ITF Wheelchair ranking list, with a career best of 45th place, has demolished the likes of India and Malaysia on his journey to the final only to go down fighting to top seed Ho Won Im of Korea. Dissanayake has not let up easily as is clearly indicated by the scores that each set has seen. The final score read 7/5,6/2 in favour of the Korean.

Sri Lanka excel in Wheelchair Tennis World Cup

The Sri Lankan Wheelchair Tennis Team had a quite successful World Cup campaign…

Three other Lankans have participated in the tournament as well namely, L. Senarathne, R. Dharmasena and S. Ranaweera. Unfortunately, both Senarathne and Dharmasena saw end to their voyage in the second-round while Ranaweera went down tamely to fellow mate Dharmasena in the first round.

In the men’s doubles category, Ranaweera and Dharmasena started out in the top seed position and was awarded a BYE in the first round. Sadly they were three points shy from reaching the finals as they went down to the Korean pair Im and Lee who eventually went on to win the doubles title. The scores read 6/3, 3/6 after two sets of play with a super tie-breaker to decide the match; which ended 10/7 in favour of Korea.
