It was a close finish for the Lankan swimming champion Mathew Abeysinghe as he takes the third place in the second heat of the Men’s 100m freestyle event with a timing of 50.97 seconds.

Firing out of his ramp, Mathew Abeysinghe in lane #3 was equally competitive and the final 10 meters was the decisive distance that saw him firing up all guns to come in contention with the top two swimmers.

He however, finished third behind Igor Mogne of Mozambique and Sean Gunn from Zimbabwe.

The winner of the heat, Igor Mogne recorded a timing of 50.65 seconds and coming in second Gunn of Zimbabwe finished with 50.87 seconds.

Securing the third place of the heat, Mathew had himself an Olympic timing of 50.96.

This was definitely not Mathew’s best timing as he gained his Olympic ‘B’ qualification initially finishing 50.53 in Hong Kong. Nevertheless, the effort of Abeysinghe in the main stage competing with the heavyweights is indeed appreciable as he finished 50th in the overall rankings of the event. A total of 59 swimmers took part in the event.

Kyle Charmers of Australia finished the heats topping the leaderboard with a timing of 47.90 seconds while Caeleb Dressel from the United States completed the event in 47.91 seconds.

Defending Gold medalist from London, Nathan Adrian took the final spot in the semifinals completing the race in 48.58 seconds.
