The 34th Mercantile Athletic Championship organised by the Mercantile Athletic Federation (MAF) which spanned over three days from the 20th to the 22nd of October at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakshe Stadium concluded today crowning MAS holdings as the overall champions of the competition.   

A total of 330 events were conducted at the competition which spanned across 6 age groups in women’s and Men’s segment. There were two separate open segments for both males and females categorized as Novices and Championship.   This year 53 private firms sent in their representatives for the competition while over 30 athletes from Indian Athletic Federation also participated in what was a very competitive championship.

MAS Holdings (MAS) who were the bridesmaid at the last year’s Championship avenged their defeat to winners of last year Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT). MAS accumulated a total of 567 points and were comfortably ahead of the second placed SLT. Sampath bank was placed second with a total of 224 points. The Indian team that participated managed to accumulate a total of 83 points.

Vinoj De Silva of Hela clothing was adjudged the best male athlete in the championship category for his time of 11.00 in the 100m while H K G Amarawansa of Hatton National Bank took home the best female athlete award with a leap of 4.55m in the long jump. Amarawansa was also awarded the overall best female athlete award while Nadeera Vijayanga of MAS holdings was crowned as the best athlete for his jump of 1.95m in the high jump.
