St Patrick’s College won their second penalty shoot out in the tournament this time to win 3rd place of ThePapare Football Championship 3rd/4th play off game played at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Pramantha cracker sends Joes to Finals

Chalana Pramantha scored the goal of the tournament so far to help St. Joseph’s College in a 2-1 come back win…

Maris Stella once again almost got the perfect start as they did against St. Joseph’s College when Tharinda Silva was brought down just out side the box with the first move of the game.

Rajindu Fernando took the free kick and the curler was heading to the right corner until Rakitha Kijuman got his finger tips to save it.

Both teams played in the midfield for a long period of time without much goal threat but 12 minutes down Rajikumar Shanthan  made a brilliant move to beat the defender. Prakash Perera rushed out from his goal line to save a certain goal.

Shanthan once again got Prakash Perera to work, making a diving save to palm the ball away for a corner.

The resulting corner was initially cleared however the second ball cross fell to Shashigaran Abeeshan who headed home to give the Jaffna boys the lead.

Shashigaran Abeeshan made life comfortable for St. Patrick’s with his second header of the afternoon when he was once again unmarked for the second ball cross.

Out of the blue Maris Stella got a life line on the added time when Mohamed Shipan on the right wing shot directly at Kijuman who palmed away the shot high. The keeper hoping the ball will sail over the cross bar was surprised that it ended in his goal.

Half Time – Maris Stella College 1 – 2 St. Patrick’s College

Second half start was perfect for the Negombo boys when Mohamed Shipan got the second bite of the cherry to tap in home after his initial shot was blocked.

Soon after Tharinda Silva got an opportunity to increase his goals tally only to be denied by Kijuman in the goal.

Both teams looked physically battered with the short turn around from the semi finals as missed tackles were frequent and players needed treatment.

Mohamed Sajid kept his team in the game with a goal line clearance just after the hour mark. Rajikumar Shanthan free inside the box headed in from a corner after keeper Prakash Perera was caught off position.

With 20 minutes to go Hamilton Hains came close to put St. Patrick’s back in the lead. His lob beating goal keeper Perera went agonizingly wide off the left peg.

With 80 minutes gone Rajindu Fernando then made a long range effort on target. Kijuman was alert to tip it over the cross bar.

Abheeshan then got his third free header off a corner only to head it hard over the cross bar as St. Patrick’s kept pushing the Maris Stella defense.

Both teams looked exhausted with every minute ticking as the even battle ended all square at full time.
