The last of the quarter-final games in the Singer ‘U15 Division One’ schools cricket tournament was played today (12th September), when Mahanama College, Colombo and St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala locked horns to fight it out for a spot in the semi-finals.
Winning the toss, the Mahanama skipper stuck to his team’s plans and opted to put runs on the board first. Mahanama reputed for big totals this year, were in trouble at the start of the innings losing 3 wickets with the score below 50. But decent batting performances in the middle steadied the ship for Mahanama. Banula Agalawatthe brought some control to the innings with a fighting 33, and Devindu Kakirideniya scored an unbeaten 28 before Mahanama rather surprisingly decided to declare at a 120 for the loss of 6 wickets. Kalindu Wijesinghe and Pasindu Thenakoon picked up 2 wickets each.
In reply St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala got off to a speedy start and was going at 6.8 runs per over at the end of the first 6 over’s. But things started to fall apart as Inuka and Mahen ran through the St. Anne’s batting lineup, picking up 4 wickets each. They bowled out St. Anne’s for 105 runs to gain first-innings honors and reserve their place in the semi-finals. Muiz Rafeel and Rishitha Perera batted well for St. Anne’s making 29 and 26 runs respectively. Thus, the early afternoon declaration from Mahanama was merited, getting them to a well deserved victory.
