Lasal Jayawardena of Lyceum International School, Nugegoda, representing the Sri Lankan U 14 Team won a bronze award at the Asian Cup Chess competition held in Jiaxing, Shanghai, China from 5th to 12th November, 2016.
Sri Lanka achieved equal second place in the event on par with the strong Chinese team, but were placed 3rd as per the tie break. This is a major achievement by the Sri Lankan juniors as it shows that we could be in reach of a medal at a world level in the near future.
Lasal was also excellent at the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2016. He was placed 6th in the under 14 open category, having beaten many strong players representing the commonwealth union.
The event was held at Citrus hotel – Waskaduwa in August, 2016.
